NFL Draft 2019: Biggest steal for each team
By Randy Gurzi
The draft boasted by the Los Angeles Chargers ended up being rather impressive. They got a great defensive tackle in Jerry Tillery from Notre Dame with their first pick.
Then in the second round, they landed Nasir Adderley out of Delaware. Adderley played both cornerback and safety in college, but projects as a starting safety and gives Los Angeles a great duo with him and 2018 rookie Derwin James.
They even used a fifth-round pick on a potential quarterback to groom in Easton Stick from North Dakota State. The former backup to Carson Wentz, Stick continued the school’s tradition of winning and was given some significant praise by coaches and teammates who thought highly of his leadership qualities.
While the Stick selection was good, the move before that becomes their biggest steal. With the 130th overall pick in the fourth round, the Chargers took another Notre Dame defensive player in linebacker Drue Tranquill. There’s no question whatsoever about this kid’s talent, as Tranquill is easily one of the better linebackers in the draft. The problem is, he’s been very unfortunate with injuries.
Already considered undersized, Tranquill ended up redshirting as a sophomore after tearing his right ACL. This came following him tearing his left ACL the season prior. He did bounce back and played 12 games in 2016 and 13 in each of the past two, but some teams are still worried about his career longevity.
While there could be some real cause for concern, his talent is undeniable and worth much more than the value Los Angeles paid to acquire his services.
