NFL Draft 2019: Biggest steal for each team
By Randy Gurzi
Another team that had no picks in the first round after making some trades was the Los Angeles Rams. They did end up with three selections in the third round after making their moves, as well as one in the second which they used on safety Taylor Rapp out of Washington. He was a great selection, but not their steal.
That honor goes to offensive tackle David Edwards from Wisconsin. Edwards was taken in the fifth round and has a shot to develop into a starter for Los Angeles, as long as they’re patient and understand he’s still learning the position as stated by Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.
"“Quarterback-turned-tight-end-turned-right-tackle who has maintained his light feet but is missing functional strength and body control to hold his ground against NFL power. Edwards isn’t the technician we’ve come to expect from the Wisconsin program and he’ll need additional technique work to help make up for some of his physical deficiencies. He’s still a pup as an offensive lineman and he should improve with more experience and weight room work, but it’s tough to project him behind average backup to low-end starter at this point. ” — Zierlein, NFL.com"
The team said they had no problems drafting linemen and letting them sit and learn. That’s exactly what will happen here and it’s going to end up making the Rams look smart.
Edwards made huge leaps as a player early on in his transition and will only get better the more work he gets. It may take a season or two, but this pick will pay off.
