NFL Draft 2019: Biggest steal for each team
By Randy Gurzi
The first round of the 2019 NFL Draft was pretty ugly for the New York Giants. They reached for a quarterback with the No. 6 overall pick, as they took Daniel Jones out of Duke.
While Jones did have his share of believers, most expected him to be a day two or day three pick that needed time to develop. General manager Dave Gettelman seems to think he will still sit for several seasons behind Eli Manning, which is not the norm for a guy taken so early.
From there, they added a nose tackle in Dexter Lawrence at No. 17, which was the main pick they got in exchange for Odell Beckham Jr. A third pick in the first round was added and there, they added DeAndre Baker out of Georgia.
While Baker is a decent corner, they got a lot more value for a similar player at No. 108 overall in Julian Love from Notre Dame. The two have nearly identical measurables, drill results and draft grades from NFL.com, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to see Love becoming the better pro player out of the two.
In three seasons with the Fighting Irish, Love was credited with 176 tackles and five interceptions — two of which he returned for touchdowns. He’s a high IQ guy who excels in coverage. The Giants knew they needed to upgrade their secondary and they did just that in the draft. They may not have gotten everything right, but this pick was a home run.
