NFL Draft 2019: Biggest steal for each team
By Randy Gurzi
One of the biggest moves on Thursday night came courtesy of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who moved all the way from No. 20 to No. 10 in order to draft Michigan linebacker Devin Bush. They gave up a lot, but he fills a massive need for them after losing Ryan Shazier. They also found a starting cornerback in the third round when Justin Layne fell to them at No. 20.
Their biggest steal though came in the fourth round when they took Kentucky’s Benny Snell. The former Wildcat running back was a workhorse for the SEC program and racked up 3,873 yards and 29 touchdowns in three seasons. Still, scouts seem down on him due to his lack of overall speed, as indicated by Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller.
"“Snell was incredibly productive at Kentucky and captured the attention of fans with his dominance in the SEC. But scouts see a tight, slow, limited runner who profiles as a rotational back who can win in short-yardage situations.” — Matt Miller, Bleacher Report"
Regardless of what is said about Snell’s speed, he has vision and power that can’t be taught. He likely won’t be a starter, but putting him in a committee with James Conner will improve the Steelers run game in 2019. That’s something the Steelers could stand to do as this happened to be one of their few weaknesses last season.
They finished 31st in the league in yards per game, according to NFL.com. Of course, their scheme has a lot to do with this, but they also had their share of struggles, especially the games that Conner missed when injured. Snell gives them a better alternative and will be a fan favorite for his hard-nosed style of play.
