Round 3, Pick 78: Michael Deiter, OL, Wisconsin

The Miami Dolphins forfeited their second-round pick to the Arizona Cardinals, as mentioned previously. So business picked back up for Miami in the third round. Surrendering the 62nd pick didn’t hinder the Phins from drafting another day one starter. They continued to build their team from the inside out by drafting Wisconsin offensive lineman Michael Deiter.

Ja’Wuan James left for greener pasture in the form of $52 million thanks to Joh Elway and the Denver Broncos. At left tackle, they have Laremy Tunsil and, after that, nothing else. Versatility, guys who can do more than one thing, seems to be the theme of the new Dolphins regime in terms of roster-building.

While not an elite guard prospect, Deiter will automatically improve the Fins offensive line. He brings versatility to the table. During his Wisconsin tenure, Deiter started 24 games at left guard, 16 at center and 14 at left tackle.

As an athlete, he’s good enough to move in space. He’s strong enough to anchor the run. Deiter’s intellect and skill-set make him a Day 1 starter. Under new offensive coordinator Chad O’Shea, the Dolphins are likely to employ a man-to-man blocking scheme. Where Deiter lines up is ultimately up to the coaching staff. However, Deiter is a natural fit as an interior lineman.
