2. Jalen Guyton, WR, North Texas
Particularly with the signing of Randall Cobb this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver corps seems to be in good shape entering offseason workouts. This group includes Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, Tavon Austin, Cobb, Allen Hurns, Noah Brown and several others. Having said that, there is always room to upgrade with pass-catchers and Jalen Guyton could be a guy to do that for Dallas.
Guyton was one of the best unheralded athletes of the entire pre-draft process. At the North Texas pro day, the former Mean Green receiver tore it up as he posted a 4.35-second time in the 40-yard dash, jumped 37.5 inches in the vertical and completed the 3-cone drill in just 6.90 seconds. Per Bobby Belt of NFL Network, that makes Guyton the only player in the pre-draft testing to go sub-4.4 in the 40 and sub-7.0 in the 3-cone drill.
For what it’s worth, Guyton wasn’t all athlete and no production either. In his two seasons seeing the field for North Texas, Guyton totaled 103 catches for 1,575 yards and 15 touchdowns (54 catches, 805 yards, six touchdowns as a senior). Though he wasn’t breaking records by any means, he was putting up numbers that aren’t negligible while in college.
It’s unlikely that Guyton will be ready to be a major contributor right away. However, he’s clearly a player that has untapped potential as an athlete and one that could be a weapon for the Cowboys. If he can show that in offseason workouts and training camp, he could well take a spot on the 53-man roster.
