Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns had some comments to make about former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and opposing teams should be terrified
Myles Garrett put up an All-Pro sophomore campaign in 2018 for the Cleveland Browns, yet after Thursday’s Bleacher Report article featuring the mammoth edge rusher, we are left thinking what could have been.
Free from the constraints of former defensive coordinator and interim head coach Gregg Williams, the sky is the limit for Garrett and the Browns defense.
While Garrett still thrived in his first healthy season, the question has to be asked: what in the world was Williams thinking? In the piece featured by Bleacher Report, Garrett is quoted saying:
"“I hopefully have more freedom to be the player I want to be… Gregg [Williams] was more like: ‘You win with these two moves. I feel like you can’t always be so predictable…’ You have to have some freedom to throw different looks at them, and we didn’t always have that”"
There were screams from the mountaintops for Williams to be named head coach of the Browns after leading them to a 7-8-1 season, but in reality, it is a sigh of relief he is now in New York as the defensive coordinator of the Jets. One thing is for certain: Garrett is coming in 2019, and this time without a leash.
Already one of the most prolific pass rushers in the league, Garrett has managed 20.5 sacks, 21 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and 47 hits on opposing quarterbacks — with just two moves. The league has yet to see Garrett’s full arsenal yet, but this upcoming season, on a football field near you, he will be on full display as the Browns have four primetime games.
There is a reason Williams was not named full-time head coach last season and, frankly, his defense in Cleveland often underperformed. Now free of him, the Browns defense, led by Garrett, are free to take light up opposing offenses in 2019.
