Oakland Raiders: Projected rookie roles, statistics for 2019 season
WR Hunter Renfrow (No. 149 overall)
Don’t sleep on wideout Hunter Renfrow, who stands at 5-10, 184 pounds and put up seven reps on the bench during the NFL Scouting Combine. He’s a clutch pass-catcher, who’s going to move the chains. The former Tiger caught 19 passes for 190 yards and four touchdowns in three title games.
Whatever Renfrow lacks in athleticism, he makes up for it in route-running, reliable hands and quickness on short passing plays. Last year, quarterback Derek Carr faced constant pressure, which forced him to throw the ball faster than anticipated.
Under duress, Carr will be able to look toward Renfrow and trust him to haul in quick strikes in the slot. Gruden will move his wide receivers across the formation, so the Clemson product may find ways to use his subtleness against slow-footed perimeter cornerbacks as well.
Because of his technical ability and good hands, Renfrow could become the most productive late-round pick in the Raiders’ rookie class.
Projection: 37 catches, 428 yards, 4 touchdowns
DE Quinton Bell (No. 230 overall)
Like Johnson at cornerback, Quinton Bell doesn’t have a full grasp of his position. He lined up at wide receiver for three seasons at Prairie View A&M and transitioned to defensive end for his last term. The versatile playmaker recorded 42 tackles, 8.5 resulting in a loss of yards and 7.5 sacks at his new position.
Bell is listed at 6-4, 253 pounds, which shows he has the size to remain at defensive end, but position coach Brentson Buckner must help him develop his pass-rush moves to reach the quarterback. For a talent still learning the position, that’s not going to happen overnight.
The FCS product should see a lot of work during the preseason. The Raiders need help at defensive end. Bell could make the 53-man roster, but he’s still a long shot to land a spot on the depth chart in September. Clearly, early-stage development is the key to his push for regular-season snaps.
