Seattle Seahawks: Best pick from every draft under John Schneider
By Samuel Teets
2018 – Michael Dickson (149th overall)
It’s hard to judge players based on one season, but Dickson is the immediate standout from the 2018 class. While most of Seattle’s draft picks, including sixth-round pick Jacob Martin, still have compelling talent that has yet to be fully showcased, Dickson came into the league and made an immediate impact.
The punter was taken in the fifth round and the selection paid off. Dickson is from Sydney, Australia, but he attended Texas where he was a three-year starter and the 2017 Ray Guy Award winner. In his rookie season, Dickson punted 78 times for 3,759 yards and 3,355 net yards. 28 of his punts landed inside the 20 and only five went for touchbacks. He’s also the man responsible for making punting cool again. Seriously, it’s actually fun to watch this guy kick the ball.
2019 – TBD
Honestly, the NFL Draft is a total guessing game and me picking a player here would just be a bunch of the same. I don’t want to say who will have the best career because we haven’t seen any of these guys play in a single game yet. However, D.K. Metcalf, Gary Jennings, Phil Haynes, and Ben Burr-Kirven received high draft grades from me, but a lot of that has to do with when they were selected and not necessarily who among them are the better players.
If this whole examination has any trend though, it’s that the Seahawks consistently hit on mid to late picks. Besides Thomas who was taken 14th overall, the next highest drafted player on this list is Reed who was taken at 49th. Four of the nine players mentioned were taken at 149 or lower. If we take the average pick number of the nine players, it comes out to 108. Seven of Seattle’s 11 draft picks in 2019 were taken after the 108th pick.
