The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are set to release defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and the Dallas Cowboys should waste no time calling his agent about a union between the two sides

Throughout the offseason, it’s seemed as though a divorce was coming between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

There were reports that he wanted a new deal as well as rumors that the Bucs were shopping the veteran. It appears that there were no takers because the Bucs are set to release him rather than pay his $13 million salary.

The move was first reported by Rick Stroud, who covers the team for the Tampa Bay Times.

McCoy, who recently turned 31-years old, should have no problem finding suitors for his services this season — and one team that should be kicking the tires is the Dallas Cowboys.

While the Cowboys boasted a strong defense in 2018, they didn’t have an impact player at the three-technique thanks to the continued absence of David Irving. Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli was able to work around this, but one thing that’s always been true about his defense is they’ve always been better when he has that player who can wreak havoc as an interior pass rusher.

McCoy would be a perfect fit in such a role. He’s been a consistent force throughout his career and hasn’t slowed down much at all as he’s entered the twilight of his career.

Last season, the veteran defensive tackle recorded 28 tackles and six sacks while adding 21 quarterback hits. For Dallas, he wouldn’t be the long-term answer but he would be an excellent add who would also be able to mentor their rookie second-round pick Trysten Hill.

The UCF product has some untapped potential and could end up being the answer for the next several seasons. However, he has some growing up to do as he learns the NFL game.

Having a six-time Pro Bowl player ahead of him will help him as he learns the ropes — and it will also help the Cowboys as they would have an impressive line with McCoy joining DeMarcus Lawrence, Robert Quinn, and Tyrone Crawford.
