21. Buffalo Bills draft Ed Oliver
Drafting at No. 9 this season, the Buffalo Bills ended up getting quite the steal. Heading into the 2018 season, Houston Cougars defensive tackle Ed Oliver was seen as a potential first overall pick. He was compared to Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams, as each is slightly undersized, but make up for it with incredible burst and athleticism.
As the season went on, the buzz around Oliver started to wane some. This wasn’t anything he did, but more so due to Quinnen Williams’ emergence as a top-tier draft prospect. The Alabama Crimson Tide defensive tackle started to come on strong. He ended up being the first interior lineman to come off the board with the New York Jets taking him at No. 3 overall.
For Buffalo, this was great as it allowed the Bills to get Oliver without even having to make a move. He now comes to a team led by a defensive-minded head coach in Sean McDermott, who will be itching to use Oliver.
The scary thing about this is, Oliver was actually misused at Houston. While he did still show up on tape, the Cougars didn’t truly unleash him as he played more of a nose tackle role for them. Due to that, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see Oliver become a better player in the NFL than he was in college.
With the Bills, he will move around more — and there’s even talk about him lining up as a linebacker in some sets — which will put his speed on display. This selection was great for Buffalo and got its draft started on a positive note.
