18. Miami Dolphins trade for Josh Rosen
The belief for much of the offseason regarding the Miami Dolphins was that they were tanking in 2019. Rookie head coach Brian Flores was set to enter his first campaign with just Ryan Fitzpatrick as an experienced quarterback option after trading away Ryan Tannehill.
Their decision to move on from Tannehill made a lot of sense, as he wasn’t taking the next step in his development. He also started to have problems with his availability, so they decided a fresh start was needed on both sides.
However, going into the season with Fitzpatrick as the starter felt like they weren’t giving it their all. Sure, Fitzpatrick was on fire to start last season and even took Jameis Winston’s job twice during the year. But, he also lost it both times as there’s a lot of tragic that comes with the “FitzMagic”.
Then during the draft, we all realized that Miami wasn’t tanking, the Dolphins were just waiting for the right move. This came when the Arizona Cardinals made their decision at No. 1, which was to draft Kyler Murray. The arrival of the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback meant that the 10th overall pick from 2018 was about to be on the move.
For just a late second-round pick and a fifth-round pick in 2020, the Dolphins were able to land Rosen, who will compete with Fitzpatrick for the starting job. It would be surprising to see him fail to win that job, which means Miami may have found its starter of the future, while everyone assumed they were mailing it in.
