23. Seattle Seahawks got a steal for Frank Clark
The Kansas City Chiefs made some questionable moves regarding their pass rushers this offseason. They moved on from Justin Houston, despite him still recording 18.5 sacks the past two seasons. Then, they traded away Dee Ford after he had 13 sacks and seven forced fumbles.
That eliminated most of their edge rush, which out an already bad defense in rough shape. To address this need, they then overpaid for Frank Clark — twice.
Clark, who had similar numbers to Ford, but without the forced fumbles, was in the midst of a contract dispute with the Seattle Seahawks. They were unwilling to pay him long-term, which led to Seattle exploring trade options. Eventually, they found a partner in the Chiefs, who surrendered a first and third-round selection for his services.
After that, they gave him a five-year contract worth $105.5 million — which was nearly $20 million more than what the San Francisco 49ers gave Dee Ford. On top of that, Ford only cost a second-round pick in the trade, which shows just how much the Chiefs overpaid.
For the Seahawks, it was the exact opposite. They were able to move on from a player they obviously weren’t comfortable paying long-term and got great draft stock in return. Now, the moves they made in the draft could be questioned, as they seemed to reach in the first round once again, but what they were able to do with Clark was a strong move on their part.
