1. S Tre Boston

This is a signing that’s made sense from the beginning. The Packers need a competent center-fielder who can also play the run, and free agent Tre Boston appears to be the best option given his value and the current makeup of Green Bay’s roster.

Yes, the Packers drafted an uber-athletic free safety in Darnell Savage who figures to play all over the field. But Savage can best be utilized as a nickel corner, where his skill-set translates the most to the NFL. A former cornerback, Savage isn’t inept at playing in the deep half of the field as a roaming free safety, but he’s best at covering man-to-man near the line of scrimmage.

This is a huge reason signing Boston makes sense. New signing Adrian Amos will most likely play in the box as a strong safety, and the Packers don’t have a true nickel cornerback. Savage would fit in best at that position, while Boston would be able to handle all responsibilities on the back end. Boston was PFF’s No. 19 rated safety in coverage (subscription required) with a grade of 78.2.

It remains unknown why Boston is still unsigned, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he waited until training camps begin to latch onto a team given how long he’s already waited. He waited until August last season to sign with the Arizona Cardinals.

It’s also worth noting that Savage opened OTAs as the Packers’ starting free safety. Behind Savage are former undrafted free agents Raven Greene and Tray Matthews, while Josh Jones‘ future with the Packers is up in the air.
