The Kansas City Chiefs made it clear that Damien Williams is the top running back for now heading into the 2019 season.
As difficult as it was for the Kansas City Chiefs to adjust on offense without Kareem Hunt late in the year, it looks like the team has struck gold with Damien Williams filling in as the running back’s replacement.
After limited action during his first four NFL seasons as a member of the Miami Dolphins, Williams ended up signing with the Chiefs last offseason, although it wasn’t until towards the end of the season when Hunt was officially gone that he made his presence felt.
Just how good was Williams for Kansas City? Well, in his first start with the team coming in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers, Williams managed to rush for two touchdowns to go along with six receptions for 74 yards.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, Williams came up big for the Chiefs in the playoffs as well after rushing for 129 yards with a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts in the Divisional Round on top of three trips into the end zone during the AFC Championship.
Clearly, Williams made a name for himself in the postseason for Kansas City, and it’s even led to the running back earning the starting job heading into the 2019 season over Carlos Hyde.
Some critics will make the claim that Hyde’s experience alone makes him worthy of starting over Williams, but the Chiefs seem to know what they’re doing at running back.
To help get ready for the start of training camp that will be here before football fans know it, here are three reasons why Kansas City is making the right call in making Williams the No. 1 running back for now.
