Edge Defender: Jadeveon Clowney, Houston Texans

Edge defenders are getting PAID right now (examples: Frank Clark and DeMarcus Lawrence), and that trend figures to continue moving forward. The next likely beneficiary of the value of the pass rusher is Jadeveon Clowney.

Currently sporting the Houston Texans’ franchise tag, Clowney is set to make $15.9 million in 2019. However, beyond that, there are no guarantees for the former No. 1 overall pick. Don’t be surprised if that changes in the near future, though.

Put simply, Clowney will push for the highest paid edge rusher when he signs his new deal. Although injuries have been a concern, there’s no denying that he’s among the best in the business when healthy and on top of his game. Over the last three seasons, he’s racked up three Pro Bowl selections, 24.5 sacks and plenty of big plays against the run as well.

Here’s the one thing to keep in mind, though: that money may not come from the Texans. The two sides haven’t been able to come to terms, and reports indicate that Houston isn’t opposed to trading Clowney if a deal isn’t struck.

One way or another, Clowney will need a freight train to haul the money he makes on his next contract.
