The third-round rookie: Connor McGovern

One of the more surprising moves of the offseason for Dallas came in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft when they took Penn State guard Connor McGovern at No. 90 overall. A talented interior lineman, McGovern was a great value pick but it was a shock considering their need at safety.

With some of the best prospects still on the board at safety, including Virginia’s Juan Thornhill, Dallas took McGovern and immediately it called into question their commitment to Connor Williams at left guard. However, this move likely has more to do with La’el Collins than Williams.

Dallas is already stretched thin in terms of cap space and with Collins set for free agency in 2020, they could move Williams back to tackle and replace him at guard with McGovern. In the meantime, he provides depth at guard and also started at center for the Nittany Lions which could come in handy should Travis Frederick miss any more time.

It may not have been a popular pick at first but it was made with the future of the line in mind. Their goal is to remain strong in this area and having someone with the ability to start at more than one spot helps them continue to dominate.
