Former top prospect: Xavier Su’a-Filo

The Houston Texans were in need of a quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft but decided to pass on one twice. With their first-round pick, they decided to go with South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. That pick ended up looking pretty good, but their next one deserves some heat.

With Jimmy Garoppolo and Derek Carr available, Houston took UCLA guard Xavier Su’a-Filo at No. 33 overall. While he did start 48 games in his career, Su’a-Filo struggled for much of his time in Houston.

He ended up leaving as a free agent in 2018 and joined the Tennessee Titans. He never made their final roster though and ended up in Dallas. He proved to be a smart signing there as he wound up taking Connor Williams job at one point. While he struggled in pass protection, Su’a-Filo’s power in the run game was a welcome addition. He enters this season behind Williams, but still has a shot to unseat him.

Son of a legend: Larry Allen, Jr.

Another Harvard product on the Cowboys O-line is Larry Allen, Jr. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because his father was a Hall of Fame player who was with the Cowboys from 1994-2005. Like many other undrafted free agents, Allen has a lot of work to do to make the 53-man roster. However, he’s going to be fun to root for considering how great it was to see his father block for Emmitt Smith back in the day.

Fighting for a spot: Cody Wichmann

The final guard on the depth chart is Cody Wichmann, a former sixth-round pick of the St. Louis Rams. He started seven games a rookie at right guard and played in the same role in 2016, starting 11 more games.

Since then, Wichmann hasn’t made an active roster. He was with the Tennessee Titans for the 2017 season but only as a practice squad member. He was on the Dallas practice squad last season but with no more eligibility for that unit, he needs to crack the 53-man roster to stick around.
