Green Bay Packers: 3 Possible trade partners for safety Josh Jones
By Joe Kipp
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a relatively mediocre safety tandem on paper heading into next season with free safety Sean Davis and strong safety Terrell Edmunds. Behind those two are inexperienced backups, with Jordan Dangerfield showing the most promise in limited action last season.
Former Packers safety Morgan Burnett played a role as a dime linebacker for the Steelers last season but became frustrated with his lack of playing time. He was released earlier this offseason and was replaced with veteran safety Mark Barron. Josh Jones could play a similar role to Barron and previously Burnett if general manager Kevin Colbert wants to take a shot on an athletic tackling machine.
With the team selecting linebacker Devin Bush Jr. with the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft, the Steelers could be looking for a viable backup in the middle and in subpackage situations. Pittsburgh currently doesn’t have a reliable backup coverage middle linebacker behind Bush and Barron — Vince Williams is mainly a run stopper — so this is a trade destination that makes sense.
The Steelers could take a gamble on a former second-rounder in Jones for essentially nothing. The acquisition of Jones would give Pittsburgh two first-round and two second-round safeties.
