Seattle Seahawks: 5 Players who need to improve in 2019 season
By Samuel Teets
Will Dissly, TE
I didn’t really like putting Will Dissly here because he’s only a second-year player who saw action in just four games last season, but I think he could play a big role on the team moving forward.
If you don’t remember, Dissly was a fourth-round pick from Washington last year. He exploded onto the scene in Week 1, recording 105 yards and a touchdown on just three receptions. He recorded another three receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown in Week 2. In Week 3 he caught one ball for four yards and, in Week 4, he caught one for five before getting injured and landing on IR.
While Dissly’s hot start in Week 1 was impressive, he fell off substantially after that. He was on pace for just 624 yards in 2018 (16 games) despite that 105-yard performance. His other projected averages, 32 receptions and eight touchdowns were mixed.
Eight touchdowns would be great, but 32 receptions would be just four more than what Antonio Gates posted at 38 years old. The biggest concern is, if you knock off the 105-yard week and four-yard week as outliers, Dissly’s average yards per game total drops and he’d total just 392 yards per season. This reveals a potential future issue with consistency.
Dissly is a terrific blocker, but he could play a larger role in the offense by helping Lockett and the young receivers out in the passing game. I’ve always said that Russell Wilson could use more targets and Dissly has the potential to be a more important piece than just a blocker. He just needs to reach a point where he can consistently produce and not have a 100-yard dip two weeks after a big game.
It should be noted that I could have named any one of a number of offensive linemen on this list as well. Specifically, Germain Ifedi and Justin Britt both could be asked to do more, specifically when it comes to pass blocking.
However, The Seahawks have had success with the style of line they’re playing with right now and that’s largely why I decided to put off another rant about that group. There will be plenty of time to roast them when the preseason starts.
