Dallas Cowboys: 15 Best players in team history
By Randy Gurzi
To this day, anyone who wears the star on their helmet and plays quarterback for the Cowboys is held to a higher standard than any other quarterback in the league. As the face of “America’s Team,” that player is expected to shine on, and off the field — and being good isn’t enough. They’re supposed to be great.
The reason there’s so much scrutiny can all be traced back to the days of Roger Staubach. No. 12 quarterbacked the Boys from 1969-79 and established a winning tradition during the time when Dallas earned their national moniker.
As a starter, Staubach was 85-29 and won two of his four Super Bowl appearances. He took the job from Craig Morton midway through the team’s 1970 campaign, a season after Morton took Dallas to Super Bowl V, and he never looked back.
A six-time Pro Bowl selection, Staubach was a great face of the franchise off the field as well. He won the NFL Man of the Year in 1978 and was a member of the U.S. Naval Academy as well.
Staubach retired with 22,700 passing yards and 153 career touchdowns and was the first player to earn both a Heisman Trophy and Super Bowl MVP. In 1985, he was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and to this day remains a strong supporter of the Cowboys organization.
