Other free agents considered

I also considered the possibility of Seattle signing former New York Jet Bilal Powell. Powell is a shifty back who has more talent as a pass catcher out of the backfield than Chris Carson or Rashaad Penny. Considering his different running style, he’d also be a good change of pace back for Seattle. On top of that, the Seahawks dominated with their three-headed backfield last season. Bringing in Powell would give the team three solid threats yet again.

Another idea that was toyed with was bringing in middle linebacker Manti Te’o. Te’o saw a significant number of starting snaps in 2017 with the Saints but was mostly a backup last season. The only players on the depth chart behind Bobby Wagner at middle linebacker are 2017 undrafted free agent, Austin Calitro and the rookie Cody Barton.

The Seahawks obviously have other linebackers capable of moving inside, but those are the two primary backups. Calitro did post 45 combined tackles last season and Wagner has only missed one game in the last three seasons, but I think Te’o could add some welcomed experience and depth behind Wagner.

The other player I wanted to put on this list because of personal bias was Eric Berry. Now, I don’t even know if the Seahawks could afford him — I’m not even sure what his market is — but I’ve always been a big Berry fan and you have to admit his leadership alone would be welcomed in a secondary that has lost Earl Thomas (free agency) and Kam Chancellor (cut) in the last few months.
