2020 NFL Draft: The year of the wide receiver
By Ryan Roberts
Denzel Mims, Baylor
Entering 2018, a lot was expected of Baylor star wide receiver Denzel Mims. Unfortunately for Mims, third round San Francisco 49ers draft selection Jalen Hurd stole a bit of the spotlight and targets this past season for the Bears. Hurd aside, Mims demonstrates a ton of dynamic traits that NFL evaluators will surely covet going into the 2020 NFL Draft.
Possessing very good length at 6-3 and 215 pounds, Mims presents a great catch radius that allows for some incredible acrobatic catches. This skill is even further on display with his outstanding body control, making 50/50 ball opportunities and back shoulder throws seem routine at times
Right now, there is a lack of refinement with Mims as a route runner and he is also a victim of a concentration drop from time to time. If those areas are refined come this season, look for Mims to be a huge riser in a stacked wide receiver group.
Van Jefferson, Florida
Van Jefferson is the son of former NFL wide receiver Shawn Jefferson, who played 13 seasons in the NFL after being selected in the ninth round of the 1991 NFL Draft. You can tell Van has been around a lot of football growing up, demonstrating some of the best technical route running in the entire country.
After transferring from Ole Miss following the 2017 season, Jefferson was able to quickly assert himself as the go-to receiver for the highly improved Feleipe Franks. While he may never jump off the tape with athleticism, he possesses the body control and separation ability due to his solid route running to find a niche at the next level for a long time.
