7 Greatest Philadelphia Eagles players of the 21st century
By Adam Patrick
5. Nick Foles – QB
In terms of statistics, Nick Foles is certainly not the most productive quarterback to ever put on an Eagles uniform. But the success Philadelphia has experienced during Foles’ time under center is what will make him an unforgettable part of the team’s history.
At first, however, it didn’t seem like his tenure with the Eagles was going to turn out that great. Foles started six games as a rookie in 2012 and Philadelphia came away with a win in just one of these matchups. Still, the Eagles felt confident about his abilities and he had the opportunity to be the team’s starting quarterback again in 2013 after Michael Vick went down with an injury.
All Foles did in his first start that season was throw for 296 yards and three touchdowns while leading Philadelphia to a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
After his performance against the Bucs, he went on to remain the Eagles’ starting quarterback for nine of the team’s final 10 games that year. Philadelphia won eight of Foles’ 10 starts in 2013 and he finished the season with 2,891 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, two interceptions and an invite to the Pro Bowl.
After getting traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2015 and spending the 2016 season with the Kansas City Chiefs, the quarterback returned to the Eagles in 2017. During the 2017 regular season, Foles only started a total of three games as a replacement for Carson Wentz. The cards seemed to be stacked against Philadelphia entering the playoffs that year with their backup starting under center.
But Foles found some magic and ended up leading the Eagles to the franchise’s first-ever Super Bowl win. His impressive performance in Super Bowl 52 ended up with him being named the game’s MVP.
No matter what Foles does during the rest of his career, Philadelphia’s fans will always look back on his tenure with the team fondly after he was able to help deliver a Vince Lombardi Trophy to the franchise.
