7 Greatest Philadelphia Eagles players of the 21st century
By Adam Patrick
4. LeSean McCoy – RB
Before Le’Veon Bell arrived in the NFL in 2013, LeSean McCoy was viewed by some as the top all-around running back in the league. McCoy was not only skilled between the tackles, but he was also a dangerous receiving threat out of the backfield.
Selected by the Eagles in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft, the running back found himself as the team’s starter by 2010. In 13 starts that season, McCoy rushed for 1,080 yards and seven touchdowns while also catching 78 passes for 592 yards and two touchdowns.
His production took an even bigger leap during his third year with Philadelphia in 2011. That season, he finished with 1,309 rushing yards, 48 catches for 315 yards, and a total of 20 touchdowns (17 rushing, three receiving). McCoy’s performance in 2011 resulted in his first-career invite to the Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro selection.
Injuries limited him a bit in 2012, but then he stormed back to the top of the NFL during the 2013 season. He earned another trip to the Pro Bowl and a second First-Team All-Pro selection after rushing for a league-leading 1,607 yards, catching 52 passes for 539 yards, and scoring a total of 11 touchdowns that year.
After McCoy had another Pro Bowl season in 2014 with over 1,300 rushing yards, he was traded to the Buffalo Bills during the following offseason.
Even though he was only with the team for six years, his 6,792 rushing yards are currently the most of any player to ever suit up for the Eagles. McCoy also holds Philadelphia’s all-time record for most rushing yards and touchdowns in a single season.
