After being drafted in the first-round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Darnell Savage Jr. immediately stepped into the starting free safety role at the beginning of OTAs. That trend continued through the end of minicamp, and it seems Savage is the heavy favorite to be the starting free safety on opening night against the Chicago Bears.

As if being drafted in the first-round of the NFL Draft wasn’t enough, though, Savage was showered in praise this past week by star receiver and teammate Davante Adams.

"“He’s going to be that guy – I can tell. We definitely got a steal. I know we got him (Savage) early, but I still think that he could have gone even earlier (in the draft) just based on what he’s doing out there,” Adams told Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette."

Savage was drafted with the 21st overall selection in this year’s draft after the Packers traded up nine spots to select him. Based on what we’re hearing from teammates, coaches and the media, Savage might be one of the biggest impact rookies in the entire 2019 draft class. And oh yeah — Savage has been the only rookie working with Green Bay’s first-team defense. It won’t be surprising to see him as the starter in Week 1.
