Heartbeats in the Nation’s Capital were skipping beats all day as the 2019 NFL Draft approached. The Twitter machine was going wild with speculation that Dan Snyder was about to “take over” the draft, which brought up bad memories of the last time he did so.

That would be in 2012 when he mortgaged everything for Robert Griffin III out of Baylor. That one blew up in their faces which, but with the need for a quarterback once again strong, it felt as though the team’s owner could again be desperate enough to take a wild swing.

Instead, he and his front office stayed put and somehow still landed Dwayne Haskins — who is arguably the best pro prospect at the position. On top of that, they made an affordable move back into the first round and landed edge rusher Montez Sweat out of Mississippi State. So in the end, Snyder did own the first round but didn’t have to do anything crazy in the process.

They’ve also put themselves in a position where they won’t have to rush Haskins onto the field as they landed Case Keenum in a trade with the Broncos. Their running game will also help as Adrian Peterson is returning after a strong campaign, plus Derrius Guice should be back after his ACL injury cost him his rookie season.
