Chicago Bears: 5 Players who will surprise in 2019 training camp
CB Duke Shelley
Okay, so some people may say that this isn’t an under the radar kind of guy. Duke Shelley has already become a fan favorite and many see a bright future for him. I think his future may be now, however.
Shelley has shown the coaching staff in person what he could do on the field. The coaches and scouts looked a lot at his tapes and liked what they saw. They liked him even more in person.
Similar to Bars on the offensive line, Shelley suffered an injury that cost him a lot. He was another player who could have gotten drafted earlier, but because of his injury he fell to the Bears in the sixth round.
Shelley was grateful for a chance to play on the best defense in the league. He will play with a chip on his shoulder knowing he should have gone earlier. He wants to show all the other teams they made a mistake in not grabbing him.
That motivation could catapult him. He’s done well in the minicamps. Now he needs to also do well during training camp and in preseason games. If he does, he’ll surprise many. Shelly was an outside cornerback at Kansas State. He needs to adjust to the nickel and he knows what he needs to do, per Bleacher Report:
"“Nickel’s a hard position to play, just because of where you’re at on the field. There’s more grass, more field to cover. Guys have opportunities to go two-way go on you and things like that. But my skill set fits it, being my size and how quick I am and the feet I have. The transition, I don’t feel like will be hard for me.”"
I think Shelley will be a big surprise at training camp. He will blow people away with how he plays and will push Skrine hard for the starting spot. This battle will go down to the wire and Shelley has a good chance of beating Skrine for the starting spot.
There are usually some pleasant training camp surprises for many teams. While the Bears are pretty settled, these five players will surprise people and find themselves helping the team go on a Super Bowl run.
