The Oakland Raiders veterans will report to training camp in Napa on July 26. A few of the experienced players must show out or lose a roster spot.

Last offseason, Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden flipped the roster. Most incoming regimes tear down to rebuild in their collective vision—that’s almost expected.

While many fans gripped about some of the moves, Gruden and the coaching staff won’t allow draft statuses to cloud player evaluations. The Raiders waived safety Obi Melifonwu, a 2017 second-rounder, as he struggled to stay healthy during last year’s offseason program.

Some may call Gruden impatient with talent development on some levels, but he’s not going to keep an unproductive player in place of an active asset. The lead skipper’s unpredictable nature and desire to foster a competitive in-house environment puts everyone on notice. What have you done lately?

The Raiders’ veterans will join the rookies in Napa, California July 26. Once they arrive, a few players should look over their shoulders because the competition at various positions could push them off the depth chart.

Aside from modest production, injuries should put two of the three players below on high alert. In all the cases, the veterans listed will compete for reps at positions with solid depth. Teams have embraced rotations at certain spots, but the coaching staff can only give a certain number of snaps to a group without leaving someone on the sidelines.

If a player stands on the roster bubble, we shouldn’t write him off right away, but an underwhelming showing through the preseason will likely end his tenure with the Raiders.

We’ll take a look at three veterans in serious danger of missing the 53-man cut in September.
