P Britton Colquitt

For the Browns, a team that has punted the ball a ton over the past three years and even longer, Britton Colquitt was a much-needed necessity. Because he was much needed, he was handed a rather generous extension of four years and $11.2 million by Sashi Brown back in 2017. He is due $2.55 million this year to perform his duties as the punter for the Browns this year.

While the Browns have $32 million in cap space as we speak, that number is going to dry up as the young talent on this roster progresses through their rookie deals. Colquitt’s $2.55 million, ranking him ninth among all punters, could become an expendable deal and make him a cap casualty.

Not to mention, Jamie Gillan, the “Scottish Hammer,” has become all the rage in Cleveland. While Gillan has a growing fanbase in Cleveland, he can straight boom the ball as well, making Colquitt’s cap hit even more expendable. It is becoming a young man’s game in Cleveland, and Gillan may just have the edge over the expensive veteran Colquitt.

Colquitt has spent three years in Cleveland after he was cut by the Denver Broncos and signed by the Browns in 2016. Over that span, Colquitt has averaged about 46 yards per punt while punting the ball around 80 times per season.
