Sam Mustipher, Offensive Lineman

The Chicago Bears have a solid offensive line (though some fans still have questions about that). They have a young core, with Kyle Long being the oldest at 30 years old. They’ve been together for a while now so they’ve gelled pretty well. James Daniels is only in his second season but he got to learn with the other four linemen.

What the Bears need are dependable backups so they can play enough to help the starters stay fresh. The team signed five undrafted free agents and have veterans T.J. Cummings and Ted Larsen. If the young guys can make their case to make the team, I see a couple of them on the roster in Week 1.

Sam Mustipher is one who might make the team. He was a four-year starter at Notre Dame, including his final 38 games. He had a productive career with the Fighting Irish, doing especially well in the run game. He has good strength and a mean streak, something you want in a lineman.

With Daniels taking over the center spot, Mustipher needs to show some flexibility. If he shows that he can handle playing some guard, he could make the team. He’s worked with offensive line coach Harry Hiestand when both were at Notre Dame, so they’re familiar with each other. If anyone can get the youngster up to par, it’s Hiestand.
