Bill O’Brien’s team rebounded from bad start to win the AFC South in 2018. What numbers are worth a closer look when it comes to the Houston Texans in 2019?

Following a miserable 4-12 showing in 2017 and losers of their first three games this past season, it looked like it would be a second consecutive long year for head coach Bill O’Brien and the Houston Texans.

The team had finished 9-7 in each of his first three seasons at the helm and captured the AFC South in 2015 and 2016. The Texans won a Wild Card playoff game that latter year before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in the Divisional Round.

Regardless, O’Brien’s club did dig itself quite the hole this past year. But the team gathered itself and suddenly there was a nine-game winning streak. When it was all said and done, the Texans were an 11-5 football team and division champions for the fifth time dating back to 2011.

Second-year quarterback Deshaun Watson continued to impress and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins continued to make his case for being the best player in the league at his position. On the other side of the football, defensive end J.J. Watt came up big after missing plenty of time the previous two seasons.

But for all of the positives, the team fell twice at home late in the year to the Indianapolis Colts. The second setback came via a 21-7 loss in the wild card playoffs. Now it’s a new year and while the Texans are defending AFC South champions, they feel like the hunter rather than the hunted. What numbers bear watching when it comes to this club in 2019?
