Breaking down Dallas Cowboys 2019 defensive tackle depth chart
By Randy Gurzi
Former Jayhawk: Daniel Wise
Something about the way Daniel Wise plays just makes him seem like a Rod Marinelli guy. The former Kansas starter doesn’t stand out in any one way but he simply made plays happen. He’s able to get his pads low and win battles, which led to him recording 152 tackles and 17 sacks in his four seasons.
Even with his decent numbers, Wise went undrafted but could be quite the find for Dallas. He’s a fit as a three-technique but has some issues taking on powerful blockers according to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com.
"“Athletic, gap-seeking 3-technique who plays with a disruptive mindset. Wise plays with a low pad level and loose upper body that he uses to slither around blockers and into the backfield, but he can be underwhelming when taking on power. He is a busy-body pass rusher with the ability to find the edge early and then create his rush counters with footwork and agility. He’s not always aesthetically pleasing due to inconsistent body control, but the work gets done.” — Zierlein, NFL.com"
As Zierlein says, Wise gets the job done. With Marinelli, that’s all that matters. This makes him a player to watch as they make their roster cuts down to 53.
Potential Player: Ricky Walker
Another player to keep an eye on as they cut things down is Ricky Walker. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 284-pounds, Walker was an offensive and defensive lineman in high school that ended up spending five seasons with the Virginia Tech Hokies after redshirting during his sophomore season.
Like Wise, he struggles with power but does a good job gaining leverage against his blockers. His best bet may be to make the team through the practice squad but there’s still plenty to like about his game.
