7 Greatest Pittsburgh Steelers players of the 21st century
By Adam Patrick
5. James Harrison – LB
It’s crazy to think that James Harrison almost decided to walk away from football in 2004. After going undrafted in 2002, getting cut by the Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens, and having to play for the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe, Harrison considered quitting football and becoming a veterinarian.
But he was given another shot by Pittsburgh in 2004 and it ended up being one of the best decisions the franchise ever made. From 2004-06, Harrison’s role was as a reserve on the Steelers’ defense. But then in 2007, he was given the chance to be a starter and he made the most of his new opportunity.
During his first season as a member of Pittsburgh’s starting defense, Harrison accumulated 98 total tackles (12 for a loss), 17 quarterback hits, 8.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, and one interception. His performance in 2007 also resulted in the linebacker earning his first of five-straight trips to the Pro Bowl.
From 2007-11, Harrison was one of the best defensive players in the entire NFL. And in 2008, after racking up 101 tackles and 16 sacks, he was actually named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Without Harrison out on the field, the Steelers probably don’t defeat the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII in 2008. His 100-yard pick six at the end of the first half is something that will always be regarded as one of the best plays in Super Bowl history.
Harrison officially retired from the NFL in 2018 after spending part of the season with both Pittsburgh and the New England Patriots. His 80.5 sacks are the most of any player to suit up for the Steelers during the 21st century.
