The Miami Dolphins are clearly in a period of transition but which players could take advantage and break out during the 2019 NFL season?

The Miami Dolphins are not going to be contending for a Super Bowl in the 2019 season. That shouldn’t come as breaking news to anyone as this team is clearly in transition. Adam Gase is out as head coach and former Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores is in. Ryan Tannehill is no longer the starting quarterback as veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and second-year pro Josh Rosen take the helm.

Examples of the Dolphins being in a transition period go beyond just that, specifically regarding the overall talent on the roster. They are going to build from the ground up. Unfortunately for fans in South Beach, starting at the ground doesn’t mean that there’s going to be a great deal of success.

Having said that, even the lackluster teams in terms of wins and losses have their flashes. Even if the overall roster talent of the Dolphins isn’t impressive, there are still solid pieces on this roster. And some of those pieces are going to stand out in the 2019 NFL season.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at three potential breakout candidates for Miami heading into this season as these guys can show up big despite a likely disappointing overall season from the team as a whole.

Most Notable Omission: Josh Rosen, QB

The temptation to put new Miami Dolphins quarterback Josh Rosen on this list was certainly there. Despite the rollercoaster rookie season in Arizona that was filled with plenty of valleys, the former UCLA signal-caller is still a player worth believing in. In terms of the tools, Rosen checks all of the boxes that you want and, if he can get his mental state and situation right, he can be great.

However, that situation is not right now. From the offensive line to the weapons to the scars from his time in Arizona, Rosen is likely not ready to have a breakout season right out of the gate in 2019. Especially with Ryan Fitzpatrick in the fold, the better bet is for Rosen to eventually take over but to ultimately be eased into the mix. For that reason, he doesn’t make the “official” list of three breakout candidates.
