The Miami Dolphins have announced that Jim Caldwell has stepped away from his coaching duties for 2019 due to health issues.

Lightning has struck twice for the Miami Dolphins, unfortunately. First, on July 8 defensive tackle Kendrick Norton suffered a career-ending injury in an automobile accident. Now, Jim Caldwell will miss this season because of health reasons. This comes as a shock to many NFL observers.

Caldwell was named to the Dolphins coaching staff in February. He was hired as the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach by new head coach Brian Flores.

He released a statement concerning his condition. Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported, the following including Caldwell’s statement:

"Caldwell did not want to disclose the nature of his health concerns, … “I will be stepping back due to some medical complications that require my full attention,” Caldwell said."

Caldwell will act as a consultant throughout the upcoming season, according to Deen’s report. Flores has not named a replacement for Caldwell, as reported by MiamiDolphins.com. His wealth of knowledge will be missed.

Caldwell spent 10 seasons in Indianapolis where he coached Peyton Manning. Josh Rosen and Ryan Fitzpatrick should thrive under his tutelage and his understanding of playing quarterback in the NFL. This might translate into winning more games because of good decision making on the field by either quarterback.

Since the Dolphins or Caldwell did not specifically name the source of his health issues, it sounds like something that needs him to fully address without the rigors of coaching a full season. Caldwell will still have a place with the team but not on a daily basis, it appears. Caldwell needs to do the necessary things to get well and back on the sidelines.

Next. Every NFL team's best under-the-radar move. dark

Here’s to a speedy recovery for Caldwell. Expect him to do the right things to get well. Although he is stepping away from his coaching duties, his knowledge and influence will stay in the locker room. Caldwell is a good coach and highly respected among his NFL peers.
