Green Bay Packers: 3 Early breakout candidates for 2019 season
2. Equanimeous St. Brown, WR
In the 2018 draft, the Green Bay Packers made a number of late-round efforts to improve the depth of their wide receiver corps. One of those moves in that regard was to take Equanimeous St. Brown out of Notre Dame in the sixth round with the 207th overall pick in the draft.
Coming from the Fighting Irish, St. Brown clearly had potential that just needed to be realized. Standing at a daunting 6-5, 214 pounds, there’s no denying that St. Brown has the length and size to cause matchup problems against most defensive backs in the league. Additionally, he also showcased solid athleticism in college and in the pre-draft process to make people salivate more about what he could be molded into.
As a rookie with Green Bay, St. Brown showed some flashes of his ability. In Week 5, he finished with three catches on five targets for 89 yards. Meanwhile, his season finale in Week 15 saw him catch all five of his targets for 94 yards. All told, he finished with 21 catches on 36 targets for 328 yards and no touchdowns on the year.
Entering his second year in the league, though, St. Brown could be in for big production. While fellow 2018 draft class member Marquez Valdes-Scantling really showed more as a rookie, St. Brown has a chance to put his stamp on 2019 as his breakout season, emerging as a more polished and consistent player that is a nightmare matchup in the red zone, resulting in the first score of his career and more to come after that.
