NFL: The 30 most incredible duos in league history
By Brad Weiss
17. Sean Payton and Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
When Hurricane Katrina hit the City of New Orleans back in 2005, it had a devastating effect on the entire community from top to bottom. The 2005 New Orleans Saints were not a source of happiness either, as they finished the year with a 3-13 record. They were one of the worst teams in all of football.
However, in 2006, the fortunes of the franchise would change for the better in a major way, as the organization went out and got a brand new head coach and quarterback. Those two men would lead not only the Saints franchise but the entire City of New Orleans out of the darkness, becoming one of the better head coach-quarterback tandems in NFL history.
That 2006 Saints team would go on to finish 10-6 behind quarterback Drew Brees and head coach Sean Payton, one of the better turnarounds in NFL history. The Saints would make it all the way to the NFC title game. Although they ended up losing, they would return again three seasons later, this time punching their ticket to the Super Bowl.
In that Super Bowl, Brees and company would go on to beat the Indianapolis Colts, with Brees being named Super Bowl XLIV MVP. Payton and Brees are still at it. In their time, Payton has become the all-time winningest coach in Saints history, while Brees is the league’s all-time leader in passing yards.
