Green Bay Packers training camp: 5 Players with most to prove
By Joe Kipp
The Green Bay Packers open 2019 training camp on Thursday, July 25. Here are five players with the most to prove entering training camp.
The NFL season is nearly upon us. It won’t be long before players of the Green Bay Packers will embark on their daily trek to practice on Dream Drive via bicycles, a tradition first started by legendary Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi. Packers players are set to report to training camp on July 25, with 16 practices open to the public.
The Packers enter training camp with a breath of fresh air, led by first-year head coach Matt LaFleur and second-year general manager Brian Gutekunst. It will be the first time since 2006 — the year Mike McCarthy was hired — that Green Bay will enter a season with a new coach.
Of course, a new coach doesn’t necessarily mean guaranteed results. But it does guarantee some form of change. In fact, it’s already started. Take, for instance, the fact that LaFleur allowed music to be played over the loudspeakers at practice during organized team activities this offseason, something McCarthy never allowed during his time with the team.
As for the players, Green Bay will have 20 total practices during training camp, including a joint practice scheduled with the Houston Texans. With 20 practices comes 20 days for players on the roster bubble to state their case for why they deserve a roster spot on the 2019 squad.
The Packers have plenty of young players looking to prove themselves, along with a few veterans who could be on the wrong side of the roster bubble if they don’t step up. Green Bay’s front office will need to cut the current 90-man roster down to just 53 players by early September. With that said, here are five players who have the most to prove during Packers training camp 2019.
