Despite being stacked with wide receivers, the Saints only have two guaranteed starters. Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr. shouldn’t be the only two to carry the workload. That’s why the Saints are in their current predicament and why training camp is going to be incredibly important for the team’s overabundance of receivers. No doubt, there’s going to be a battle for who stands behind Thomas and Ginn.

One name that no one seems to be mentioning is Cameron Meredith. A pickup via free agency after his time with Chicago, Meredith dealt with injuries last season and never broke out as the Saints hoped. However, a good outing at training camp could help secure his roster spot.

The Saints lack a good slot receiver since losing Willie Snead and a little extra effort by Meredith could change everything. If not, he could quickly fall behind the likes of Tre’Quan Smith and Lil’Jordan Humphrey.

With the Saints losing Mark Ingram, it’s more important than ever that they have reliable receivers. Most, if not all the carries will go to Alvin Kamara with some help from Latavius Murray. Even so, the team has to be prepared with a solid passing game if Kamara experiences a slump.

Ultimately, it’s a test for Meredith. First, to show that he was worth the price the New Orleans Saints paid. Second, that he’s able to bounce back from injury. He has struggled with injuries in the past, so hopefully, he can show the same kind of resilience. If not, then his second training camp with the Saints could be his last with the team.
