Seattle Seahawks: Ripple effects of Jarran Reed’s suspension
By Samuel Teets
Seattle Seahawks star defensive tackle, Jarran Reed has been suspended six games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
When the Seattle Seahawks agreed to trade Frank Clark this offseason, they thought Jarran Reed would be around to help fill the void left behind. Reed had a breakout season in 2018 and appears to be one of the league’s rising stars. However, Reed’s path to stardom and the start of Seattle’s season have both hit an unplanned detour.
Reed has been suspended for the first six games of the 2019 NFL season. The suspension stems from a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy that occurred back in 2017. A domestic violence case was launched against Reed, accusing him of assault. Reed wasn’t arrested and he’s not facing any legal fallout from the charge, but the NFL has the power to suspend players regardless of the legal outcome.
Domestic violence is a very serious issue in today’s society and the NFL has made a point to treat accusations seriously. According to an article written by ESPN’s Brady Henderson, the incident occurred on April 27, 2017. A woman who had been dating Reed for a short time alleged that he grabbed her by the throat and wrists while forcibly moving her during multiple confrontational moments at a party.
For more details about the alleged assault, you can check out Henderson’s article. I cannot speak to which side is telling the truth in this matter. The police could not prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the incident occurred, but that doesn’t mean a crime wasn’t committed.
Beyond the incident, though, we can be sure that Reed will miss six games to start 2019. And on the field, it’s worth exploring the effects of that suspension on the Seahawks defense.
