Minnesota Vikings training camp: 4 Position battles to watch
By Joe Kipp
1. Backup Quarterback
We all know Kirk Cousins will be the starting quarterback for the Vikings on opening day, but one of the biggest questions entering training camp will be who ends up as Cousins’ backup. The Vikings have three viable options to choose from in Sean Mannion, Kyle Sloter and Jake Browning.
Mannion, who was signed to a one-year deal this offseason, is entering his fifth season in the NFL and is the most experienced of the group. He spent his previous four years with the Los Angeles Rams, including two seasons with head coach and offensive guru Sean McVay. Sloter is entering his third year with the Vikings and the last year of his current contract. Meanwhile, Browning is an undrafted rookie who has seemingly nothing to lose.
The favorite of the three to win the job appears to be Mannion, the only quarterback to have taken an NFL regular season snap. No matter what, at least one of the three will ultimately be released, as three quarterbacks is essentially the limit for most NFL teams.
Even so, it looks unlikely the Vikings will keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, which means only one of the three will be kept. This makes the backup quarterback battle even more vital, as the Vikings will essentially have to pick the right man for the job if they’re only going to keep one of them. Let the fun begin.
