Green Bay Packers: 5 Early standouts at training camp
By Joe Kipp
3. Rashan Gary, OLB
Despite giving the Packers organization harsh criticism for selecting Rashan Gary with the No. 12 overall selection in this year’s NFL draft, it appears fans are coming around to the idea of Gary being a legitimate lottery ticket as a pass rushing specialist. Though he’s had his hick-ups from time to time, Gary has flashed immense potential during his first week of training camp.
The 6-4, 277-pounder says he reported to camp at 10 percent body fat, a feat which seems nearly impossible for a player of his size and stature. That said, it’s a believable accomplishment seeing that Gary was arguably the most athletically-gifted player regardless of position in the entire 2019 draft class.
Gary has shown off his explosiveness during both one-on-one and 11-on-11 drills, notably beating All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari twice during a one-on-one drill earlier this week. Bakhtiari rarely gets beat during these drills, which makes it even more surprising. Both defensive coordinator Mike Pettine and head coach Matt LaFleur have praised Gary’s effort in camp so far.
It will be interesting to see if Gary can continue his success into the regular season, especially as his rookie campaign wears on. The transition from college to the NFL is difficult enough, but many rookies struggle with the longevity of a 16-game NFL season. If Gary can stay healthy and rested, watch out.
