There’s certainly a lot to be said for player who sets the NFL rookie record for touchdown passes in a season. In some ways, former University of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield was a surprise selection by the Cleveland Browns at the first overall pick in 2018.

He finally took the field in the second quarter of a Week 3 Thursday night tilt with the New York Jets. He was the catalyst in the team’s comeback win and the franchise’s first victory since Week 16 of 2016.

When it was all said and done, Mayfield would connect on 63.8 percent of his throws for 3,725 yards and nearly twice as many scores (27) as interceptions (14). He would venture outside of the pocket 39 times for 131 yards. The talented passer was sacked 25 times and lost three of his seven fumbles. That means Mayfield would wind up with 17 of the club’s 24 turnovers this past season.

So with a supporting cast that includes wide receivers Jarvis Landry, Antonio Callaway, Rashard Higgins and newcomer Odell Beckham Jr., emerging tight end David Njoku and sure-handed running backs Nick Chubb and Duke Johnson, could the Browns’ latest starting quarterback take a run at leading the league in touchdown passes in 2019?
