5. San Francisco 49ers: Grant Delpit, S, LSU

This season is going to be big for the San Francisco 49ers who had some terrible luck last year. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and running back Jerick McKinnon each suffered ACL tears and missed the entire 2018 campaign. Without their starting quarterback or a consistent lead rusher, San Francisco struggled their way to a 4-12 mark.

That makes then 10-22 in the two years of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch working together. Should they struggle again in 2019, they could be in danger.

In their effort to improve this season, the Niners took Ohio State edge rusher Nick Bosa with the second overall pick. Looking ahead to the 2020 NFL Draft, they again go for defense as they take LSU’s Grant Delpit. A do-it-all safety Delpit can cover, defend the run, and rush the quarterback. It’s his versatility that has John Andrade of With the First Pick asking whether or not he can be the first selection.

"Delpit has a great toolbox to work with. He can line up in the slot and stay on a receiver’s hip through his route as well as he can come down into the box and defend against the run. And don’t overlook his ability to make plays on the ball either; he has great range and ball skills in deep coverage."

He doesn’t go that high in this mock, but he’s still a high selection and joins a team that really needs help on the back end of their defense.
