5. J.K. Scott, P

It’s not very often that a special teams player, particularly a punter, gets recognition for a standout performance. But Packers punter J.K. Scott deserves praise after what he showed against the Texans on Thursday night.

After an up and down rookie season in 2018, Scott enters 2019 with much to prove as a former fifth round pick. The Packers spent high draft capital on him — at least, high draft capital for a punter — meaning they probably have faith he can turn it around. His first preseason performance against Houston was an excellent place to start.

On five punts, Scott had a net average of 45.6 yards per kick, with one punt forcing a turnover after his kick had a hang time of over five seconds.

Late in the first quarter, Scott punted from around midfield to Texans return man Keke Coutee. The kick had too much hang time and backspin, causing a muffed catch at around the five-yard line. Packers receiver Equanimeous St. Brown promptly scooped up the ball and fell into the end zone for the game’s first touchdown.

Last season, Scott finished with a net average of 44.7 yards per punt on 71 attempts. If he can raise that average above 46 yards per attempt, the Packers will be in great shape this season.
