Once again, there’s a new head coach for the team in South Florida. What do the numbers tell us when it comes to Brian Flores and the Miami Dolphins?
It remains a franchise with a rich history, even though the dominant days of the Miami Dolphins are very much in the past. An organization that first took the field in 1966, reached three consecutive Super Bowls from 1971-73, won back-to-back Lombardi Trophies the final two years of that stretch and achieved perfection in 1972 has not enjoyed a lot of success as of late.
Since realignment in 2002, the ‘Fins have won the AFC East just once (2008) and reached the playoffs only twice (2008 and ’16). Now after three seasons with Adam Gase on the sidelines, former New England Patriots’ defensive whiz Brian Flores is now the club’s newest head coach.
Compared to other offseasons, the Dolphins have been very quiet when it comes to acquiring veteran talent while the club has seen its share of departures. Too many years the team has spent a lot of money in free agency and simply did not get the desired results.
The club has tried to fix its issues year by year instead of building a strong foundation. And over the last few months, Flores and the organization are in the process of changing the culture. It’s going to take some time, but the ‘Fins have already stockpiled numerous extra picks in the 2002 NFL Draft.
But what about this upcoming season? What can be expected from a team that started 3-0 a year ago but dropped nine of its final 13 contests? The numbers could be very revealing.
