David Montgomery, Running Back

For a man who only touched the ball six times last week, I have to admit that David Montgomery‘s performance last week was one of the most electric debuts for a Bears player in recent history. Yes, there was that two-minute drive by Mitchell Trubisky in his rookie season, but this one was more exciting.

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace talked so highly about Montgomery after he moved up in the third round to get him. Then the coaches raved about him during minicamps and later in training camp. Only the fans fortunate enough to be in Bourbonnais got to see what his abilities. There was all this hype on him but the general fanbase didn’t get to see what he could do until he finally got into the game last week.

When Montgomery did get in, he performed as advertised. His first carry could have been a huge gain had it not been the quarterback Chase Daniel blocking for him. Then, on a drive in the second quarter, he picked up 41 of the team’s 49 yards, including a touchdown. He displayed all the attributes the team told us — escapability, quickness, balance, toughness, route-running, and soft hands. He announced his arrival and the Bears fans loved it.

As I mentioned before, however, it was just one game. He did well, but we need to see it again. If he has a repeat performance this week then we’ll all be looking forward to Week 3 when the starters play deep into the game. That is if Nagy doesn’t do what he did last preseason and bench all the starters.

Those six touches left us wanting to see more. Hopefully, we see a little more of him in the offense against the Giants and not on special teams. He is one player who had a lot of hype coming in, nationally as well as locally, and he showed that it wasn’t too much for him. Let’s see if that continues this week.
