Chicago Bears: 3 Standouts from Preseason Week 2 vs. Giants
The Chicago Bears were thrashed in Week 2 of the preseason but who still managed to stand out in the loss to the New York Giants?
When the regular season begins, the Chicago Bears will likely be one of the favorites to be in Miami for Super Bowl LIV. On Friday night as they played their second preseason game of 2019 on the road against the New York Giants, though, they didn’t look the part. Of course, there was a reason for that.
Bears head coach Matt Nagy elected to rest his starters against the Giants and, frankly, that skewed the score in an overwhelmingly negative manner for Chicago. They were beat up and down the field and ultimately lost, 32-13. Even if preseason wins and losses don’t matter, this one was tough to watch at many times for the Bears as Mitchell Trubisky, Tarik Cohen, David Montgomery, Khalil Mack and others rested.
Despite an overall lackluster effort, though, a handful of Chicago Bears players were able to submit quality performances. These are the three standouts from the Preseason Week 2 loss for the Bears.
Notable Omissions
In truth, there weren’t a number of standouts from a pedestrian performance. However, rookie Kerrith Whyte Jr. did flash a bit. Though he managed only 10 yards on six carries, he found the end zone on one. On top of that, he showed his return skills, averaging over 30 yards per return when asked to bring back kicks.
The performance of the kickers is also worth noting as Eddy Pineiro was the standout over Elliott Fry on Friday night. That doesn’t answer many questions as that is flip-flopped from last week’s performances but it’s certainly of note with this team.
Finally, linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski did his best to try and earn his roster spot he may be fighting for as he led the Bears defense with eight total tackles on the night. He may need to do more but a solid outing like this one won’t hurt his case by any means.
