Behind the trio of Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel and Anthony Miller — the likely entrenched top-three wide receivers for the Bears — there is a battle going on for both roster spots and playing time. Cordarrelle Patterson, Marvin Hall, Riley Ridley and 2018 seventh-round pick Javon Wims are all in the mix and trying to put their best foot forward in the preseason.

On Friday night against New York, it was Wims that stepped up with a big game, despite the pedestrian performances by Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray. The former Georgia Bulldog was the game’s leading receiver for both teams and was perhaps the most consistent part of the Chicago offense throughout the night.

Wims finished the contest with five catches on six targets for 64 yards. The pass-catcher did a little bit of everything, winning 50-50 situations, creating separation and just making plays in the passing game. It was the type of performance he needed to put himself in the conversation as one of the top-five receivers on the roster.

It remains to be seen how this group will shake out when roster cuts are made. However, as Wims — a physical freak that needed refinement coming out — continues to get reps and progress, if he can provide more games like this, it’ll be hard to not have him make the final roster.
